The word “ORANGE” has its origin in Sanskrit. The name of the fruit in Sanskrit is “NARANJ”. Sanskrit was spoekn in ancient India. India’s trade with Arabs on the fruits, took the fruits to Arabia where it was called as “NARANJAH” in Arabic. The spaniards who were ruled by the African Arabs started calling it as NARANJA. The english who bought the fruits from the Spanish started calling it as NARANJ. English does not have many words which end in J. So, its spelling quickly changed into NARANGE.
Over time, it was mis spelt as NARANGE and then as ARANGE and somehow got its present form as “ORANGE”
How a word has made its journey from sanskrit to Arabic to Spanish to English over a period of time!!
