English as a language is flourishing because it has this uncanny ability to absorb words from all over the world and make it its own. It has absorbed words from almost all the languages in the world. There are a number of Arabic words in English, for example. One of the famous arabic words is “ALGEBRA”

Algebra is a mathematical term. Its roots are in Arabic. The well known Arabic matematician Mohammad al-Khwarizmi lived in Baghdad around the year 800 AD. He wrote a book on solving of equations. It was called “ilm al-jabr wa’l muqabalah”, roughly translated as “the science of transposition and cancellation”. The term “al-jabr” became ALGEBRA in English.
